12 days in Japan - Day 11 Mt. Fuji & Hakone

Mt. Fuji is the tallest mountain in Japan, standing at 3,776 meters and is one of the most iconic symbols of the country. This active volcano is a popular tourist site with over 200,000 people climbing the summit each year.

We had decided to do a one day tour to Mt.Fuji and Hakone.

Mt. Fuji 5th Station

First stop of the day was Mt. Fuji 5th Station, otherwise known as Yoshidaguchi 5th Station or Kawaguchiko 5th Station. This is also the start of the Yoshida trail to Mt. Fuji if you wanted to hike. However there are only certain seasons when you can climb Mt. Fuji, so be sure to check in advance.

On a clear, sunny day, there are good views of Mt. Fuji at this Station, however in our case it was cloudy. There is an information centre, restaurant, gift shops and a shinto shrine located here.

Hakone

Part of the Fuji-Hakone-Izu National Park, Hakone is recognised for its beautiful scenery, hot springs and museums. We took a boat ride across Lake Ash and then the Komagatake Ropeway to the peak of Mt. Komagatake, where you can get panoramic views of the Hakone National Park and Mt. Fuji.

We seen some pirate looking boats on the lake, which are part of a sightseeing tour.
