Europe trip to Vienna, Croatia and Venice

To celebrate my birthday, we had decided to go for a trip around Europe. Hooray!

10 days in total, we visited Vienna, Croatia and Venice.

Here are some highlights from the trip. Enjoy!

Vienna

A beautiful city full of interesting buildings, museums and art galleries. We stayed in Vienna for two and a half days. I would recommend buying a Vienna Pass which will give you free entry to lots of attractions including the Schoenbrunn palace and Belvedere palace museum. The pass also includes the hop on and hop off sightseeing bus. We found the bus wasn't always ideal because it travels along a set route.  This means it can take time to travel to some of the sights where you could spend over 40mins to get to one place. Also if you are interested in visiting the Imperial Palace Schloss Hof using the Hop on and Hop off bus, be aware the bus only runs on Saturday and Sunday at specific times.

St. Stephens’ cathedral

There are lots to do in St. Stephens' cathedral, I would recommend the tour of the catacombs and going up the tower. There are great views of the city from the towers. The two towers; North and South. North Tower has an elevator to take you to the top with a walkway whereas the South tower is higher and you will need to walk up 343 steps.

Schoenbrunn palace including Privy Garden, Orangery Garden, Maze, Gloriette and Zoo.

You can easily spend a day at the palace as there is so much to see. There are lots of gardens, water features and the maze was fun. Don't forget to spot the pandas in the zoo!

Belvedere palace museum

The museum/art gallery is divided into two parts - upper and lower Belvedere. The palace houses the largest collection of Gustav Klimt's paintings including the Kiss.

Croatia

After a five hour coach journey, we arrived in Zagreb Croatia.

Zagreb

Zagreb, the capital of Croatia is full of character with art galleries, museums and narrow streets to explore. Dolac market was great to grab some souvenirs and presents.

Split

Diocletian’s Palace

Ancient palace built by Roman Emperor Diocletian between the late 3rd and early 4th century. This is the heart of the city where there are narrow passageways and courtyards with shops, restaurants and cafes.

Kliss fortress

Small medieval stronghold which was built by the ancient Illyrian tribe Dalmatian. The fortress is located outside the centre of Split and takes approx. 20 minutes by car or bus.

Hvar

A croatian island in the Adriatic sea, very popular with tourists as a summer resort. Attractions include: Fortica, Arsenal, Franciscan Monastrey and the lace museum (this was recommended by our accommodation manager).

Dubrovnik

A magnificent walled city and a UNESCO World Heritage site. The ancient walls encase the old city and you can walk on the walls and get great views of the city and the harbour. Being near the sea, the seafood is very fresh and delicious so its worth having a taste.

Attractions include: Ancient city walls,  Luza Square, Dominican Monastery & Museum, Franciscan Monastery and Old Pharmacy. There is also a cable car approx. 120kn return or 70kn for one way that will take you to Mt.Srd.

Doges palace

Once Venice's political and judicial hub. Sights inside include the beautifully decorated court rooms.

Bridge of Sighs

Bridge that connects the Doges Palace to the prison cells.

Gondola ride across the Grand Canal

You can't go to Venice without experiencing a gondola ride! It was extremely relaxing in the gondola and a great way to see more of Venice. It was also a nice way to end this amazing trip.

A big thank you to my other half for organising this trip, for being my travelling buddy and for making my birthday extra special this year.
