A family holiday in Es Canar, Ibiza

Here comes the summer along with a family holiday in Ibiza. So when my sister told me that they were considering Ibiza, my first thought was..disco lights, music and partying.

However I was surprised to find that there is a lot more than just clubs in Ibiza.

We stayed in the beach resort of Es Canar which is north east of Ibiza town (approx. 30-40mins drive). Everything is within walking distance in the town and it took us about 5mins to walk from the hotel to the beach depending on how fast you walk.

Es Canar is targeted at families, so think of sandy beaches, kids clubs, night time shows and ice cream! We had decided that it would be a relaxing beach holiday which consists of doing very little and making the most of the sun.

We stayed all inclusive - three meals with drinks, snacks included. As a group of four, it seemed better value for money however you can also stay on a half board basis if you do decide to eat out at some of the restaurants.

Beach

The beach was very long and sandy with water sports including pedals, banana boats and sofas. You can hire a sun lounger for 5 euros and a parasol however we did see people use their towel on the beach which may be a cheaper alternative. There were mostly families and couples on the beach where the children were happily building sandcastles or filling their buckets with sea water. We enjoyed swimming in the sea and in the evenings walking along the beach as the sunset.

Hippy Market

On the Wednesday, we went to the Hippy Market at Punta Arabi. It opens from 10am and is the largest hippy market in Ibiza with over 500 stalls. It is an excellent place to get presents and maybe a treat for yourself. There were stalls selling clothes, trinkets, jewellery, paintings, incense holders...the list goes on. Many of the items are hand-made, like these animals made from recycled metal. There are also places to grab food here.

Ibiza Castle

We went on the number 13/18 bus to Ibiza town. The bus stop is in the centre of Es Canar where the fountain is located and departs every 20 minutes. The journey was about 40mins and stops in the centre of Ibiza. From here, there is a 15min walk to the Castle. There is a slight hill to reach the top of the castle which may not be suitable for prams, wheelchairs or anyone who has difficulty walking. There are narrow streets leading up to the Castle with some interesting what can only be described as rooms from the Spanish past. Once at the top, there is the Cathedral and Museum. The views are worth the hike and you can get some good photographs of the sea front with the ships.

Food, glorious food and lots of it! Did I mention we were staying full-board...

If you're looking for a sunny getaway then Es Canar is a great place to go with the family especially if you have young kids.
