Jubilee weekend in Northumberland - visiting Alnwick Castle pt 2

This post is continued from the Alnwick Gardens, Northumberland . If you haven't read the post then don't forget to check it out.

Alnwick Castle

The medieval castle has been home to the Percy family for over 700years. According to the Alnwick Castle website, William de Percy (d.1906), the first member of the Percy family had came over to England on the invasion of William the Conqueror in 1066.

We had decided to take the walking tour of the castle. No booking is required, you just turn up. It was fascinating to hear all about the castle's heritage. Did you know that on top of the castle, they placed metal statues of soldiers to scare people from attacking the castle. From a distance they looked like real people.
I would recommend doing the tour as it helped add some context to the surroundings in the castle.

The castle has played a role in many films including a set location for the first two Harry Potter films.

Inside the castle, there are the grand state rooms, library, dining room, breakfast room and the china gallery and chapel. The detail inside the rooms were incredible, especially the tall ceilings and mantle pieces.

You can walk around the top of the castle and capture some amazing views of the countryside.

The verdict
Overall, the jubilee weekend away was a success! It was my first time in Northumberland and on that note, meeting the other halfs friends but not to worry, it was all good. There was a lot to see and do so it is definetly worth planning ahead so you dont miss out. A car is a must as things were scattered in different places and if your a member of the National Trust or National Heritage, you will be spoilt for choice for things to do.

Special thanks to our friends and travel buddies, Rachel and Mark for organising the trip.
