A day trip to Lincoln markets and cathedral

So when I heard my sister was moving to Lincoln.... I had figured that it would be a great place to escape for the day and at the same time, spend some time with the sister.

Lincoln is a cathedral city in the county of Lincolnshire. Known for its stunning architecture and historical beauty, and not to mention the many boutique shops.

The day begins

We started exploring the main shopping area in the centre of Lincoln. You will find the usual high street brands here. There was also a Moroccan market selling interesting items from ornaments, rugs and cookware such as tagine's. The smell of leather was definitely in the air. I was told the markets alternate  throughout the year.

I spotted this interesting building...

As we passed under the arch, we started heading towards the famous steep hill that would lead to the Castle and Cathedral.

The walk up steep hill

Ok, I will admit I am not the most "fittest" of people but the hill can get quite steep in some parts so we stopped to have breaks, it also gave us the opportunity to visit the exciting boutiques on the hill. There were many vintage boutiques selling jewellery, clothes, ornaments.

You can see the top of the cathedral on this picture.

Even the street name says it all...

This chocolate shop sold lots of homemade chocolates from truffles, pralines, chocolate bars by the weight. I picked up some triple chocolate Lincoln fudge - delicious! My sister got some oranges dipped in dark chocolate. Yum!

As you get closer to the top of the hill, there are more tea rooms and places to eat. We sat down in a little blue and white tearoom for lunch. We finally reached the top!

Lincoln Cathedral

Interesting facts....

- In 1072, William the Conqueror had commissioned the Cathedral to be moved from Dorchester, Oxford to Lincoln.
- One of the four surviving copies of the Magna Carta belonging to the Cathedral has been preserved and is within the Castle.
- During the 1300's, the Catherdal was the tallest building in the world.

Inside the Cathedral

The gothic style and intricate details in the roof, walls and stained glass windows were impressive.
