Day trip to Harewood House, Leeds

Ok, we can say this trip was for a 'special occasion' - My Birthday! You can imagine, I was extremely excited, when I had been given the day off work and so I was off to Leeds for the day.

Harewood house

This beautiful house is located outside the centre of Leeds and is around a 30 minutes drive. As you enter the grounds, you are surrounded by magnificent green foliage, lots of open space and woody trees. This would be the perfect setting for a summer picnic and there are also plenty of wooden tables and benches.

Following the marked footpaths, it led to the terrace and the Victorian garden, complete with breath-taking views. It was definitely a photo opportunity.

Whilst inside the house (home to the Earl and Countess of Harewood), there are lots and lots of rooms. These included dining rooms, music room and not forgetting the library with its tall row upon row of hard-backed books. Each room feels special in its own way and by just looking at them, you can sense there are a lot of stories to be told. There is that feeling of awe when you look at the grand furnishings and interior and I can imagine any visitors would feel very important. I should also tell you there is an audio guide as an accompaniment to the tour, but if like me, you prefer to explore and ask questions, then there are staff in each room who are very friendly and helpful.

The bird garden was noisy, bright and colourful. I couldn’t believe there were over 90 species of birds! From penguins, chicks, ducks, flamingos, parrots, owls and many more exotic/tropical looking birds to which I cannot remember the names. I was amazed to see fluffy chicks whilst dodging the peasants roaming around on the grass. However it was all too easy to get lost in the surroundings, the walkways and paths all looked very similar making it difficult to navigate around the place so having a map would be handy.
